Merdeka!
Independence Day.
Must be saddening for Tunku Abdul Rahman to see the state of our country now.
In fact, he was sidelined during the last years of his life. A veiled coup d’etat by Tun Abdul Razak. Plotting the event of May13, playing the racism card, and introducing the NEP. It was by scanning through the May 13 book by one Dr. Kua that this piece of information is made known to me. I really wouldn’t rule out this possibility even though it may sound out of this world. But if it WAS true, I have a feeling this book would be taken off the shelves by now.
Those primed and much edited history textbooks of ours were nothing but random and harmless stories for us to memorize, to pass the exams. I guess you would notice by now that there is nothing dark about our ‘history’. Kancil kicking the hunting dog into the river is no way ‘dark’.
The making of a nation could never be so tame, with so little bloodshed. Even Mahatma Gandhi, who was almost a saint for leading India towards independence the non-aggressive way was assassinated.
Forgetting our history is not a way to move forward. Weeding out the problems is. I just hope we won’t keep lying to ourselves.
All the media hullabaloo about how beautiful and peaceful our country turned out in 50 years are just bullshit. The copywriters must be kicking themselves while writing such ads. Everybody knows what’s going on, who are they bluffing?
Again, for fear of spoiling the equilibrium, should we just keep these thoughts to ourselves and wait for the worse to hit us?
I don’t even know whether am I oppressed or not.
“The social contract is essentially a quid pro quo agreement between the Malay and non-Malay citizens of Malaysia; in return for granting the non-Malays citizenship at independence, symbols of Malay authority such as the Malay monarchy became national symbols, and the Malays were granted special economic privileges.”
–From Wikipedia
Is my citizenship worth all these heartache?
It’s not that my privileges were halved, it’s just that theirs were raised.
But I wouldn’t think of going anywhere else.
